Add subtitles to a video
Most people watch social videos with the sound off, so captions keep them watching. Toola listens to your video with OpenAI's Whisper model on your own device and writes the subtitles, or you can bring your own .srt or .vtt file. Correct the text, choose the size, and get an MP4 with the subtitles written onto the picture, so they show everywhere, even where captions can't be switched on.
Private: your files never leave your device.
Video up to 1 hour. Subtitles are made from the speech on your device by OpenAI's Whisper model, or from your own .srt file: nothing is uploaded.
How to use Add subtitles to video
Step 1: Add a video.
Step 2: Press Start to make subtitles from the speech, or choose your own .srt file.
Step 3: Correct the text, pick a size and press Make video with subtitles.
Captions that people can read
- Keep lines short: Toola splits long sentences into cues of about two lines, timed to the speech.
- Choose Medium or Large for phones; Small suits landscape videos watched on a computer.
- Proofread names and numbers: one wrong word is more noticeable on screen than in a transcript.
- On vertical videos, apps cover the bottom with buttons and captions. Check the result in the app before posting.
Subtitles burned into the picture can't be switched off, so viewers always see them. If you upload to YouTube, also add the SRT file there: it makes the video searchable and lets viewers choose.
Georgian subtitles
Automatic recognition of Georgian speech isn't available yet: the Whisper models we tested couldn't recognise it reliably. You can still type Georgian subtitles in any subtitle editor or text editor in SRT format and burn them in here; Georgian letters are drawn with Noto Sans Georgian.
A minimal SRT entry is a number, a time line and the text, separated from the next entry by an empty line, for example 1, then 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500, then the sentence.
Frequently asked questions
Are the subtitles burned in or separate?
Both are possible. The video you download has them written onto the picture; you can also download SRT or VTT files to upload separately to YouTube or use in an editor.
Can I use Georgian subtitles?
Yes, from a Georgian .srt file: Georgian letters are drawn with Noto Sans Georgian. Automatic recognition of Georgian speech isn't available yet, because the Whisper models can't recognise it reliably.
Do vertical videos work?
Yes. The text size follows the shorter side of the video, so captions fit on 9:16 Reels and TikToks too.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Recognition and subtitling happen on your device.
