How to sign a PDF without printing it
Printing a contract, signing it with a pen and scanning it back takes a printer, a scanner and ten minutes, and the result is a crooked, grey copy. You can do the same on a computer or phone in a minute, with a cleaner result. This guide shows how, and explains the one thing to check first: whether a signature drawn on the page is what the other side actually needs.
Visual signature or digital signature?
There are two quite different things called “signing a PDF”:
- A visual signature is a picture of your handwritten signature placed on the page, exactly like signing a printout and scanning it. It is what most people mean and what most everyday documents need: rental and employment forms, consent forms, internal approvals, many agreements between people and businesses.
- A digital (certificate-based) signature is cryptographic proof of who signed and that nothing changed afterwards. Some government, banking and court procedures require it, often using an electronic ID card or a qualified provider.
If the request says “sign and send back”, a visual signature is almost always fine. If it says “qualified”, “digital” or “electronic signature with certificate”, use the service they name instead.
Step 1: make a good-looking signature
You can create the signature three ways in Sign PDF:
- Draw it with a finger on a phone or tablet. This looks most like a pen signature. With a mouse, draw slowly and larger than you need.
- Upload a photo of your signature: sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, photograph it in good light and upload it. For the cleanest result, remove the paper background first with Remove background and save it as a transparent PNG.
- Type your name in a handwriting font, which is tidy and fine for forms that only need a name.
Choose blue ink. It makes it obvious the document was signed, rather than being a black-and-white photocopy of a signed page.
Step 2: place it on the page
- Open the PDF and go to the page with the signature line.
- Click where the signature belongs; it appears there.
- Drag it onto the line and adjust the size so it fits naturally, roughly the height of two lines of text.
- Go to any other page that needs a signature or initials and click to place it again.
- Download the signed PDF.
Everything happens in your browser: the document and your signature are never uploaded, and the signature is not kept after you close the page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a signature drawn on a PDF legally valid?
For many everyday agreements a visual signature is accepted, in the same way as a signed and scanned page. Some procedures require a certificate-based digital signature; check what the recipient asks for.
Can I sign a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Open Sign PDF in your phone’s browser, draw the signature with your finger and place it on the page.
Can I fill in the text fields too?
Sign PDF places signatures, not text. If the PDF has fillable fields, fill them in a PDF reader first, then add the signature.
Is my signature saved anywhere?
No. It exists only in your browser while the page is open.
