How to scan documents with your phone and make a clean PDF
Offices, universities and embassies still ask for “scanned copies”, but few people own a scanner. A phone camera is more than good enough, as long as the photo is turned into a proper scan: straight, evenly lit, with a white background and a sensible file size. This guide shows how to do that without installing an app.
Step 1: take good photos
Most of the quality comes from the photo. Spend ten seconds setting it up:
- A dark surface: lay the page on a table that is darker than the paper. The edges stand out, so the corners are found automatically.
- Even light: daylight from a window is ideal. Avoid a lamp directly above you, which puts your shadow on the page.
- Straight above: hold the phone parallel to the page. Small tilts are corrected, but strong angles make the far edge less sharp.
- Whole page in frame: keep all four corners visible, with a little table around them.
- Focus: tap the text on the screen before taking the photo.
Step 2: straighten and clean the pages
Open the document scanner and add the photos. For each page it finds the four corners, corrects the perspective so the page becomes a straight rectangle, and evens out shadows and uneven light so the paper turns white.
If a corner is in the wrong place, drag it onto the real corner of the page; the preview updates as you move it. Pages are processed on your phone or computer and never uploaded, which matters for IDs, contracts and medical papers.
photo → scanDocument scannerTurn phone photos of paper pages into straight, clean scans: find the page edges, fix the perspective, remove shadows, and save a PDF or JPG. Free, no upload, no app.Step 3: choose the look
| Look | Choose it for |
|---|---|
| Colour | stamps, coloured logos, signatures in blue ink, photos |
| Grey | text with pictures or diagrams |
| Black & white | plain text; sharpest and smallest files |
For forms that will be printed or submitted, choose A4 as the page size so every page comes out exactly the same size, as if it came from a flatbed scanner.
Step 4: one PDF, the right size
Add all pages of the document in order and download a single PDF. If you scanned parts separately, combine them with Merge PDF. Many upload forms limit files to 2–10 MB; a black-and-white scan is usually a few hundred kilobytes per page, and Compress PDF can shrink a colour scan further if needed.
Need to copy the text out of the scan? Save the pages as JPG and run them through Image to text (OCR), which reads Georgian, English and Russian.
Frequently asked questions
Is a phone scan accepted instead of a real scan?
In almost all cases, yes: offices care that the copy is complete and readable. A straightened, white-background phone scan is indistinguishable from a flatbed scan for that purpose.
What if the page edges are not found?
That happens on white tables or busy backgrounds. Drag the four corner dots onto the page yourself, or retake the photo on a darker surface.
Can I scan a two-sided ID card?
Yes. Photograph both sides, add both photos and download one PDF with two pages.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Detection, straightening and clean-up all run in your browser.
