Split a panorama into an Instagram carousel
A wide panorama posted as one picture looks tiny on Instagram. Cut it into slides instead: people swipe through it and it joins up seamlessly. How a seamless carousel works
Instagram shows each slide of a carousel at the same size, side by side, so cutting one wide picture into equal slices lets people swipe across it as if they were panning. The slices only line up if they are exactly the same shape and cut without gaps, which is what Toola does.

A panorama that is wider than that needs more slides, or some of its sides cropped off. Toola suggests the number of slides that fits best.
Tips for posting
- Choose all the slides in the same post, in order 1, 2, 3…: the file names are numbered for this.
- Don't let Instagram crop them: when it asks, keep the original shape you chose here.
- The first slide is the cover in the feed, so make sure it works on its own.
- For a 360° drone sphere, first make a wide view with 360° photo to normal photo, then split it.
Frequently asked questions
Which shape should I choose?
Portrait 4:5 takes the most space in the feed and is the usual choice. Instagram’s profile grid now uses 3:4 tiles, so 3:4 slides show uncropped there too. Square suits panoramas that aren’t very tall.
How many slides can a carousel have?
Instagram allows up to 20 pictures in one post. Toola suggests the number that fits the panorama without cropping much, and you can change it.
Why are the slides 1080 pixels wide?
That is the width Instagram shows. Larger slides are scaled down by Instagram anyway, and can come out softer.
